Black Fungus infections have been detected outside of India and it is every bit as disgusting and frightening as it sounds. 

In India, the surge in COVID-19 cases led to a strange but potentially fatal fungal infection called mucormycosis or ‘black fungus’ in covid patients. 

The fungi are commonly found in soil, animal waste, and plants but usually are no match for our immune system and pose no risk. 

However, when COVID-19 infection is combined with risk factors such as diabetes and the use of steroid treatments it can present an unfortunate opportunity for the fungus to gain a foothold in unlucky patients. 

With a suppressed and weakened immune system, the fungus spreads rapidly in covid patients from the nose and sinuses to areas such as the eyes and brain.  

The fungus blocks blood flow to the infected tissue and causes it to die. The dead tissue itself is what presents the black discoloration of the skin in patients. 

The fungus is extremely dangerous if it takes hold with an estimated mortality of rate of around 50%. Previously, the infections seemed to be contained in India but reports now indicate cases are emerging in other countries. Recent cases have been reported in Chile and Uruguay.

Thousands of patients in India have had to have their eyes removed to contain the infection. The horrifying pictures emerging show the huge devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the unlikely secondary fungus infection. 

Some experts believe doctors are to blame for using steroid treatments in COVID-19 patients that suppress the immune system, but it also seems that having diabetes plays a crucial part in whether you’re at risk of getting the fungus infection.
