06 March 2024 — In the wake of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov’s assassination in February 2015, shock and anger rippled through over 50,000 Muscovites. Yet, when well-known opposition figure Alexei Navalny died behind bars in February 2024, those mourning his loss faced riot police and arrests. This change signals a chilling transformation in Vladimir Putin’s Russia — from merely tolerating dissent to brutally crushing it.

Since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, arrests, trials and long prison sentences have become the norm. The Kremlin now targets not just political rivals but also human rights organizations, independent media outlets, civil society groups and LGBTQ+ activists. Oleg Orlov, co-chair of Memorial — a Russian human rights organization — has branded Russia as a “totalitarian state”.

Orlov himself was arrested and sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for criticizing the military’s actions in Ukraine just one month after his damning statement. According to Memorial’s estimates, there are nearly 680 political prisoners currently held captive in Russia.

28 November 2023 — On Sunday, an unprecedented number of people, including former U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, took to the streets of London to protest against antisemitism. The march was strategically organized a day after a large pro-Palestinian rally and amidst rising tensions due to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Organizers hailed it as the most significant demonstration against antisemitism in nearly a century.

The crowd was a sea of Israeli flags and Union Jacks, with participants bearing powerful placards like “Never Again Is Now” and “Zero Tolerance for Antisemites.” Alongside Johnson, U.K. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and other high-ranking government officials marched in unity with the Jewish community.

Notably detained at the event was Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson, former leader of the far-right English Defence League. Earlier this month, Robinson had an altercation with police during an Armistice Day march in London after refusing to leave despite warnings that his presence could distress others.

Among those marching was 75-year-old Malcolm Canning from London who voiced his concerns about current anti-Jewish sentiment. He expressed his alarm at how anything associated with Judaism feels under attack now and lamented reaching such a stage in this country.

Produced by ABC News Studios in collaboration with Show of Force and Blackfella Films for Hulu, it also sheds light on Steve’s tireless quest to uncover the truth about his brother’s demise amidst Sydney’s notorious era of anti-gay violence.

Upon hearing about Scott’s passing in December 1988, Steve left the U.S. for Canberra, Australia where Scott resided with his partner. He then undertook a three-hour drive to Manly near Sydney where Scott died and met Troy Hardie — the officer who investigated the case.

Hardie insisted that he based his initial suicide verdict on evidence or lack thereof at the scene. He pointed out that authorities found Scott naked at the cliff base with neatly folded clothes and clear identification atop it. Additionally, Hardie mentioned speaking to Scott’s partner who disclosed that Scott had previously considered suicide.

Conservatives CLING Onto Boris Johnson’s Old Seat in By-Election

21 July 2023 — The Conservatives have narrowly secured Boris Johnson’s old constituency in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Last month, the former Prime Minister stepped down as an MP, triggering the by-election. The local councilor, Steve Tuckwell, is now the Conservative MP for the west London constituency.

Johnson’s influence largely dominated the race, although the Conservatives tried to divert attention toward the expansion of London’s Ultra-low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Despite a swing of 6.7 towards Labour, the party failed to wrestle control, with the Conservatives maintaining their grip on the seat.

Boris Johnson RESIGNS as Tory MP Over Controversial Lockdown Breach Inquiry

09 June 2023 — Former PM Boris Johnson is resigning as Tory MP following receipt of a controversial report by the Privileges Committee. The report, investigating lockdown breaches at Downing Street, provoked Johnson to label the inquiry a “kangaroo court.”

Johnson admitted to unintentionally misleading parliament in March and conceded that social distancing was not always “perfect,” but insists the Covid guidelines were adhered to.

The former prime minister slammed the committee as biased, saying its “purpose from the beginning has been to find me guilty, regardless of the facts.”
